My favorite products to prevent and treat allergic reactions and skin sensitivities.
When looking through my blog, it’s pretty apparent that allergic reactions and skin sensitivities are a huge concern in my life – and household. Through trial and error, and ultimately some expense, I have tried numerous products, only to have more products fail than succeed in our household.
Symptoms I experience from my allergies and sensitivities include:
- tiny skin blisters
- achy joints and muscles
- congestion, and
- watery, itchy eyes.
Listed below are my favorite products simply because they do not affect me adversely. As a result, I would highly recommend starting with these products if you suffer from similar allergies and sensitivities. I must caution, however, that allergies differ from one person to another, but if even a few of these work for you, I will happily have saved you some time, expense and suffering of trying numerous products before finding the right one.
Dove body wash is very gentle with a very mild scent that doesn’t affect me at all.
Quite often, if I run out of the body wash or the shampoo (see below), I will use the other until I can purchase more.
As with the body wash above, this is very mild soap with very little scent (arguably none at all).
I can use this without getting the skin blisters, rashes and itchiness I am likely to get when using other brands.
To be honest, most lipsticks don’t affect me much, but I have encountered a few that do. I’ve noticed that it’s the products I place on, over or close to my eyes that affect me the most. This is one particular brand that I like and never affects me.
With all makeup, I tried numerous brands (including some claiming to be hypoallergenic) and several times suffered severe symptoms.
One time, though, a friend gave me one of these to try and I loved it. There were no allergy symptoms and they cleaned the modern long lasting makeups much more quickly and efficiently than just soap and water.
Household cleaners often affect me when they come in contact with my skin while cleaning.
The fumes can cause even more uncomfortable symptoms.
There are a couple of ‘natural’ cleaners I use, but this is my favorite as I suffer absolutely no symptoms when using it.
With cleaning, the skin contact and fumes can cause reactions, but with dusting, I suffer quite severe congestion, itchy and watery eyes, skin blisters and rashes.
The Swiffer duster products have been a godsend as they actually do ‘trap the dust’ as the commercials say, minimizing the amount flying into the air to cause allergic reactions. I also swear by the extendable arm for getting the dust webs in the ceiling corners and dusting off the ceiling fans.
I did hope I wouldn’t need my usual step ladder since I’m so short, but all it did was allow me to change to a small step stool to reach.
All laundry products leave residue and scents in the clothing, bedding, towels, etc. Unfortunately, this is one of the most frequent triggers of my allergy symptoms. We have had to stop using dryer sheets completely and now use dryer balls instead. We experimented with several detergents and found that even ones claiming to be hypoallergenic were bothering me, but we persevered and eventually found this one.
Again, even some shampoos and conditioners that claimed to be hypoallergenic bothered me, but I discovered Tresemme years ago and it and Dove shampoo and conditioner are the only ones we buy now.
It’s so nice to just relax and enjoy a shower, not feeling like I have to rush to get out and dry off in hopes of alleviating allergy symptoms.
In my case, however, I’m quite overweight and I overuse deodorant to prevent any body odor throughout the day. I place deodorant under the armpits, under the breasts on up the chest to where it meets the sides of the neck. because I find I do sweat a lot at the base of my neck and down my chest.
This is a little more personal, but if I’m going to be honest I might as well fess up. I also use it anywhere I have skin on skin contact including under my baby belly and in the groin. The groin area especially is highly sensitive and this product is the only one I’ve found that doesn’t affect me.
I learned very early on that I’m most sensitive to floral scents. Therefore, I try only fruit or spice scents. These are much less likely to affect me.
I love to use Air Wick plugin scents in my house. It is necessary to make sure your first purchase is the kit, and then you can buy only refills after that. This kit has one of my two favorite and regularly used scents – vanilla.
My other and most favorite plugin scent is the Air Wick Country Berry.
It’s a beautiful scent that is subtle and fresh – and it doesn’t affect me at all.
Now that I’ve covered all of the products I regularly use to prevent allergic and skin sensitivity reactions, I must tell you about my most valued remedy for when I do suffer any kind of allergic reaction, bug bites, itch or rash.
I’ve written about it before (see post list below). I suffer from itchiness frequently and it can be almost like torture. I tend to scratch until I draw blood in more severe instances. With Gold Bond Medicated Body Lotion, however, if I rub some into the affected area immediately after noticing the symptom(s), I get almost immediately relief. Even in more severe cases, it works well, just not as quickly. I highly recommend using this on mosquito bites as well if you live in an area with a high mosquito population – as we do living near a slow flowing river.
